The Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat will do battle in game one to decide the NBA Championship. The Heat acquired LeBron James and Chris Bosh to team with Dwayne Wade in the off-season, and the only way this season will be a success is if they cut down the nets after this series. They are now four wins away from that goal. The Heat took awhile to get things going with their new cast of all-stars starting the season at 9-8. They went on to have a pair of slumps going 1-5 and 1-6 during the season, but otherwise have been virtually unbeatable at an amazing 59-8. Dallas has had success all season long as well, but they face an extremely tough challenge here in game one. They are on the road against a very motivated team that is playing at their peak. They are facing a team with three super stars. The Mavericks have Dirk, but Miami matches that with LeBron. Beyond those two who are both playing at amazing (but roughly equal) levels, Miami has Wade and Bosh and Dallas doesn't have anyone to match them. Dallas is much deeper, but that shouldn't matter (barring injury). Miami will play the Big Three massive minutes and when they are on the court, the Heat have the advantage. There is a chance you could see LeBron James defending Nowitski at key moments as well. The fact that around 60% of the bets are on Dallas here demonstrates that the line value on them that was there in the early rounds is probably gone. Since round two began, the Heat is 6-0 ATS as a favorite in the playoffs, and 8-0 SU at home in all playoffs games, winning by 6 points or more every time out. Defense wins Championships in the NBA Finals. The better defense here is clearly the Heat and I think they take game one at home.By Wonder.

In the 2010-11 regular season, Chicago finished four games in front of Miami. From 1947 through the 2011 NBA first round, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by four regular-season games, they have posted a 22-7 (.759) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1149 is the 18th best-of-7 playoff series for Miami, and the 44th for Chicago. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Miami has a 10-7 series record, a 1-2 Semifinals-round series record, and an 8-9 Game 1 record, while Chicago has a 25-18 series record, a 6-4 Semifinals-round record with an active six-series winning streak, and a 22-21 Game 1 record. The Capper is the Bulls 19-1 NBA Series record when having game 1 at home in a playoff series. Miami is 2-5 in all 7 game playoff series when they play game 1 on the road. The Heat have won all 3 games both straight up and against the spread this season. Most importantly in the 3 wins were the edges they had in rebounding 43-33 and free throws. They also shot better from the field, drew more fouls and had the all important free throw edge. Though its true regular season results are no always an indicator of how the teams will play in the playoffs this series seems different in that all the games were close in the regular season decided by 4 points or less which is substantial in that Chicago was able to do enough in crunch time while showing more cohesion than Miami late in the games. Look for the Bulls to win the series in what should be an excellent series. By Vinciletti.

Red Sox LH Jon Lester (4-1, 2.96 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Freddy Garcia (2-2, 2.61 ERA). Lester has won four straight decisions but was roughed up for five earned runs on seven hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings last time out in Boston’s 7-6 loss to Toronto. The lefty chalked it up to nothing more than an off-day on the mound, as he loaded the bases to open the game and gave up three runs in the first. He is 6-1 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 starts against the Yankees and threw seven shutout innings his last time in the Bronx last September. He has limited Nick Swisher to only four hits in 25 at-bats, but Derek Jeter is hitting .333 with two RBIs in 38 plate appearances. Garcia enters the matchup after giving up one earned run on six hits in six innings against the Royals last week. Although he has done a commendable job minimizing damage on the back end of the rotation, he has given up four home runs in his last three outings after keeping the ball in the park in his first three starts. He is 8-3 with a 4.44 ERA in 17 appearances against Boston. Carl Crawford and Jed Lowrie are both hitting .333 against him, but Kevin Youkilis is just 2-for-11 with three strikeouts. By Wingerter.

The Chicago Bulls team that showed up for Game 3 was a lot more like the club that had cruised through the regular season with the best record in the NBA. After regaining home-court advantage with their most dominant performance yet, not only in this series but in TY’s playoffs, Derrick Rose and the Bulls had the Atlanta Hawks right where they wanted them heading into Game 4. But credit coach Larry Drew and his Hawks, who withstood several Chicago runs and a good but not great game by Rose, coupled with a 4Q “fade” by Chicago, while the Hawks closed out the game in style for the 12 point upset, to even the series at 2-2. But we’ve seen this scenario before from Hawks in TY’s playoffs, where they follow up a great effort with a sub-par one and lose the next game, and more often than not don’t cover ATS, either – witness weak efforts by Hawks in game 5 blow-out loss at Orlando and 13 point wire to wire game 2 loss in Chicago, the latter coming after Hawks’ shocking game one upset of Bulls in Chicago. While it’s possible that the Hawks could rally for another big effort like in games one and four, it’s very unlikely that the Bulls could again become complacent and over-confident like in game one, or (after their easy victories in games two and 3) in game 4. And the main reason for Chicago’s success in games two and 3 (in addition to the 44 point career night by Derrick Rose in game 3) is that they dominated the boards in those two games, building up a 105-73 advantage on the glass in the two contests combined. Joakim Noah was the most prolific “glass cleaner,” pulling down 29 RBs in those two games. And while the RBs were basically even in game 4, due largely to Atlanta’s great shooting night (nearly 50% overall and 36% treys, with five players in double figures), we expect the Bulls’ boarding edge to re-assert itself tonite, along with their defensive intensity. Back to Rose, a tender ankle did not appear to have any effect on him on Friday in game 3, as the league MVP poured in a career-high 44 points to go along with seven assists and five rebounds. After struggling with his outside shot in the first two games, Rose buried 4-of-7 3-point attempts in Game 3 and went 16-of-27 from the field overall. But while he scored 32 points in game 4, he did miss 20 of his 32 shots. Atlanta surprised plenty of people with a relatively easy victory in Game 1, behind 34 points from Joe Johnson, who was again hot in game 4, with 24 points on 9-14 shooting, including 3-5 treys. But he had help from both Al Horford (20 points on 9-11 shooting) and Josh Smith (23 points and 16 rebounds, the latter pretty amazing for a 6” 9” small forward). But things were not quite as easy for Hawks in games two and 3, where the Bulls re-discovered their focus on the defensive end and the Hawks were unable to keep pace. Johnson slumped to 10 points in Friday’s Game 3, shooting 4-of-12 from the floor, and since going off for 22 points in Game 1, Jamal Crawford totaled 18 on 5-of 17 shooting in games two and 3 for the Hawks. The one bright spot in Hawks’ two losses was Jeff Teague, who recorded over 20 points in each of those games, plus 12 in game 4 on 6-12 shooting, while filling in at the starting point guard spot for injured Kirk Hinrich. Two strong trends worthy of note, both favoring Bulls, are that (i) Bulls are 12-4 ATS at home TY vs > .500 teams like Atlanta, and are 16-6-1 ATS TY after a SU loss, including 2-0 ATS in the playoffs, with double digit home bounce back victories over Indy in game 5 and Atlanta in game 2. Finally, we looked at tonite’s officiating crew to see if any of the 3 refs assigned to tonite’s game has any strong “bias” against either home faves or road dogs, and while we did not see any such tendency for any of the 3, we note that in the 4 games played by each team TY where Steve Jaffe has been part of the officiating crew, Chicago is 3-1 and Atlanta is 1-3. With Bulls showing in games two and 3 that they are clearly the better team when they are properly focused and motivated, like they will be tonite at home, and not wanting to extend this series any longer than necessary, especially with likely next round opponent Miami now up 3-1 over Boston and able to close out that series at home in game 5, we’ll run with da Bulls tonite with this 3 unit pick at -8.5.
